Coordinate Plane

A flat graph used to locate points with two numbers, consisting of x-values and y-values.

x-axis

The horizontal line on the coordinate plane that runs left and right.

y-axis

The vertical line on the coordinate plane that runs up and down.

Origin

The exact center of the coordinate plane where the x-axis and y-axis cross, located at $(0, 0)$.

Ordered Pair

A notation written as $(x, y)$ that names the exact location of a point, where the x-value comes first and the y-value comes second.

Golden Rule (Plotting)

The requirement to move x first, then y second every single time when locating or plotting a point.

Quadrants

The four sections of the graph divided by the x-axis and y-axis.

Quadrant I

The section of the coordinate plane where both the x and y signs are positive: $(+, +)$ (Right and up).

Quadrant II

The section of the coordinate plane where the x sign is negative and the y sign is positive: $(-, +)$ (Left and up).

Quadrant III

The section of the coordinate plane where both the x and y signs are negative: $(-, -)$ (Left and down).

Quadrant IV

The section of the coordinate plane where the x sign is positive and the y sign is negative: $(+, -)$ (Right and down).

Positive x

The direction moving to the right along the horizontal axis.

Negative x

The direction moving to the left along the horizontal axis.

Positive y

The direction moving up along the vertical axis.

Negative y

The direction moving down along the vertical axis.

x-value

The first number in an ordered pair that tells you how far to move left or right.

y-value

The second number in an ordered pair that tells you how far to move up or down.
