Integumentary system

composed of skin; protects internal tissues, organs, structures from external hazards

skeletal system

provides structural support for the whole body

muscular system

allow movement, pump blood, posture, heat generation

nervous system

body’s control and communication network, sends electrical + chemical signals between brain and spinal cord to rest of body; directs immediate responses to stimuli, usually by coordinating the activities of other organ systems.

endocrine system

creating and releasing hormones; controlling erythrocyte production (kidneys), elevating blood pressure (kidneys), controlling maturation of lymphocytes (thymus), and regulating calcium levels (thyroid and parathyroid glands).

circulatory/cardiovascular system

transport blood, oxygen, nutrients, hormones to cells throughout body while removing waste products like CO2; transports cells and dissolved materials, including nutrients, wastes, and gases, around the body

lymphatic system

monitors and transports fluid connective tissue (lymph); defends against infection and disease, and returns tissue fluid to the bloodstream.

respiratory system

facilitates exchange of O2 and CO2 between air and blood

digestive system

break down of food into nutrients so body can use them for energy, growth, cell repair

urinary system

removes most metabolic wastes generated by the body cells

reproductive system

produces, stores, nourishes, transports male/female cells and produces sex hormones
