Motivation
The process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors.
Drive-Reduction Theory
A theory stating that physiological needs create an aroused state (a drive) that motivates us to meet those needs.
Homeostasis
The maintenance of a stable internal environment within an organism.
Drive-Reducing Behaviors
Actions taken to fulfill physiological needs and reduce drives, such as eating when hungry.
Incentives
External stimuli that motivate behavior, which can be positive or negative.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
A theory that organizes human needs into a pyramid, with basic needs at the base and higher psychological needs at the top.
James-Lange Theory of Emotion
The theory that emotions arise from physiological reactions to events; we feel emotions because of our body responses.
Cannon-Bard Theory
The theory that emotions and physiological reactions occur simultaneously and independently.
Schachter-Singer Two-Factor Theory
A theory stating that emotion is based on physiological arousal and cognitive label; how we interpret our arousal influences our emotions.
Emotion
A complex psychological state that involves a subjective experience, a physiological response, and a behavioral or expressive response.
