What is meant by 'responsible government' in the context of Canadian Parliamentary Democracy?
The branch that proposes laws, the Executive Branch, is dependent on the direct or indirect support of the elected Members of Parliament (MPs). If the legislature does not approve of laws proposed, the Executive Branch may be forced to resign or call an election via a vote of non-confidence.
What is party solidarity in Canadian politics?
All party members are expected to support the party’s decisions; also known as cabinet solidarity or party discipline.
What is a 'free vote' in Canadian politics?
In special cases, party members are free to vote as they choose rather than with their parties. These free votes are usually about controversial issues.
How is the power of the Queen, as head of state, limited in Canada?
Her power is severely limited by the Constitution, which spells out how the government works and includes things like the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Additionally, there is an unwritten constitution based in the British tradition.

Those parties who did not have the highest percentage of seats in the House of Commons

Ensures everyone in the party is being a team player and following the ideas of party solidarity.

Each constituency only sends one representative to the House of Commons.
Partisanship
Bias in favor of a particular cause; prejudice.
What are checks and balances?
Mechanisms that prevent any one branch of government from becoming too powerful.
What is meant by 'Federalism'?
The sharing of power.
Proportional Representation
Citizens vote directly for a party, and then representatives are assigned based on the amount of popular support obtained.
Military Dictatorships
Providing a vision of what the country could be if led by a leader could obtain the vision
Propaganda
Set of messages designed to influence the opinions or behaviours of large numbers of people.
Controlled Participation
The population is allowed to feel as if it is contributing to the country in some way.
Directing Public Discontent
The people are provided with an enemy on which they can safely unleash their frustrations.
