Challenging the PST Model
Studies evaluating the actual mechanisms behind PST generally do not support its core assumptions:
Decreasing "negative" states like anxiety or boosting self-confidence does not consistently improve athletic performance across various sports. (Burton, 1989; Daw & Burton, 1994; Holm et al., 1996; Maynard et al., 1995; Murphy & Woolfolk, 1987; Weinberg et al., 1981).
Experimental research (e.g., manipulating physiological arousal during competition) shows no direct link between arousal levels and actual performance output. (Cohen et al., 2003)
Meta-analytic evidence confirms that only a weak relationship exists between competitive anxiety, self-confidence, and athletic performance. (Craft et al., 2003)
Challenging the PST Model Limitations
Traditional studies assume all athletes have nonclinical anxiety levels, whereas those with clinical or subsyndromal anxiety might require entirely different protocols.
PST Alternative Necessity
For a large number of competitive athletes (especially those without unusually high pre-competitive anxiety) reducing anxiety and negative thoughts has little impact on actual performance, highlighting the need for alternative non-control-based approaches.
Paradox of Thought Suppression
Recent literature challenges the long-held idea that "negative" internal experiences always cause negative behavioural outcomes
In fact, the very act of suppressing a thought leads to a hyper-awareness of it.
Metacognitive Scanning
Attempting to control unwanted thoughts triggers an automatic process:
The mind actively searches for signs of the unwanted thought or emotion.
Once detected, it immediately brings that negative thought back into conscious awareness.
As a result, task-irrelevant cognitive noise replaces the task-relevant attention needed for effective, goal-directed athletic action.

Stress Management Without Anxiety Reduction
Crocker and colleagues designed a stress-management intervention for elite volleyball players using meditation and in-practice coping skills. The program focused on present-moment attention and coping with emotions as they happen.
The Outcome: The intervention produced no reductions in competitive anxiety and minimal changes in negative thoughts.
The Result: Despite no change in anxiety levels, players experienced significant performance improvements that lasted through a 6-month follow-up.

Physical Skills vs. Psychological Control
In a qualitative study comparing athletes' best and worst performances, D'Urso and colleagues evaluated the impact of psychological skills versus physical skill execution:
Physical Skill Supremacy: Only physical skill-based constructs reliably predicted the difference between best and worst performances.
Contextual Meaning of Emotions: Consistent with contextual-acceptance theory, the authors noted that both positive and negative emotions can help or hurt performance depending on their individual meaning and intensity to the athlete.
Problem with PST Approaches
Empirical evidence shows that reducing anxiety, eliminating negative thoughts, and boosting confidence are not required for performance enhancement.
Overly Cognitive Interference: Traditional control-based PST can cause athletes to become overly self-focused and trapped in verbal-semantic thinking instead of nonjudgmental, in-the-moment awareness.
Disrupted Execution: This excessive internal focus impairs an athlete's ability to trust their trained motor skills, respond to key environmental cues, and maintain task-relevant focus.
Rationale for Mindfulness and Acceptance Alternatives
To overcome the limitations of traditional PST, researchers advocate incorporating frameworks grounded in metacognition, acceptance, and self-regulation.
Relevance to Performance: Mindfulness and acceptance-based strategies are directly aligned with self-regulation and present-moment focus.
Early Success: Beyond clinical settings, these approaches have demonstrated effectiveness in workplace stress reduction (Bond & Bunce, 2000) and softball performance enhancement (Little & Simpson, 2000).

The Trigger (Initial Internal State): As Alex steps to the foul line, his heart rate spikes, his hands get sweaty, and a thought pops into his mind:
“My hands are shaking. I am going to choke, miss the shot and let my team down.”
Cognitive Fusion: Alex fuses with the thought. He doesn't see it as just a temporary, stress-induced mental pattern. He treats it as an objective, unavoidable reality: "I am choking right now."
Avoidance Behaviour: Instead of using his normal, shooting form, Alex hesitates. He grips the ball overly tight, tries to "guide" or "steer" the shot softly to ensure it doesn't miss, or aims to just get the shot off quickly so the terrifying moment is over.

Acceptance-based models rely on two key concepts/interrelated processes:

Conscious decision to fully experience thoughts and emotions (including negative ones) without trying to reduce discomfort, allowing actions to be guided by long-term goals instead of immediate relief.
Commitment
The process of actively choosing and pursuing behaviors aligned directly with clearly defined, valued goals.
Mindfulness
Paying attention in a particular way: on purpose, in the present and nonjudgmentally.
Closely related with acceptance. Rooted in Eastern philosophy.

Practicing mindfulness builds greater self-awareness, allowing athletes to recognize habitual, automatic responses to external cues.
Enhanced Adaptability: Instead of triggering rigid, automatic reactions, athletes gain behavioral flexibility to adapt to changing competitive demands.
Present-Focused Attention: Present-moment awareness prevents excessive self-focus or worry about past mistakes and future outcomes, keeping the athlete locked into task-relevant cues.
The Danger of Attentional Shifts and Self-Evaluation
When athletes lose present-moment focus and shift to self-judgment, performance drops significantly:
Game Reversals and Momentum Shifts: Studies with intercollegiate basketball players (Klinger et al., 1981) show that when opponents made a comeback, players shifted attention from external game cues to a self-judging, future-oriented focus, causing mini-slumps and performance breakdown.
Catastrophic Performance Decline: Shifts toward self-evaluation during competition have been identified as a key factor in sudden, catastrophic performance declines among high-level athletes (Edwards et al., 2002).
Mindfulness Acceptance Commitment Approach
Integrates and adapts two established clinical frameworks for athletes:

Initial Stimulus and Thought
An athlete experiences a negative emotional reaction to an external event (e.g., anxiety when facing a skilled opponent) and generates a negative thought ("I can't keep up").
Conditioned Response
The athlete develops a secondary emotional reaction directly to that thought. Eventually, the thought and emotion become linked, triggering each other whenever the opponent or feeling is present.
Rule-Governed Action
Behaviour controlled by an internal "rule" rather than a conscious choice aligned with athletic goals
Task Disengagement
The thought or emotion becomes a cue that leads to either:
Overt disengagement: Observable avoidance actions (e.g., asking to be taken out of a game, playing passively).
Covert disengagement: Internal distractions (e.g., worry, loss of concentration, rumination).
MAC and Distal Goals
Athletes of all skill levels must consistently self-regulate their behaviour in pursuit of distal (long-term) goals at the expense of immediate gratification or short-term comfort (that following Rule-Governed Behaviour would provide).
Dual Purpose of the MAC Approach: Promotes both in-the-moment self-regulation for optimal competitive performance and the long-term commitment needed for intense training, quality practice, and skill development.
Valued Goal-Directed Action
Instead of letting internal discomfort dictate choices, athletes should focus on valued, environmental contingencies and context-required actions:
Contextually Required Behaviour: Executing sport-specific actions when required by the situation (e.g., taking an open shot despite feeling unconfident).
Process Commitment: Remaining focused on improving performance through high-quality practice and enjoying the process of athletic competition regardless of fluctuating emotions.
Focus of MAC Approach
MAC approach promotes full acceptance of internal experiences while simultaneously directing the athlete's focus toward appropriate external contingencies and required behavioral responses.
Dual Goal Pursuit: Keeps athletes focused on executing necessary actions to achieve both immediate (in-competition) and distal (long-term) goals regardless of internal thoughts or emotions.
MAC Components
Mindfulness: Developing mindful, nonjudging, present-moment attention.
Acceptance & Willingness: Accepting internal experiences as natural human phenomena and remaining willing to stay in contact with them.
Commitment: Directing attention toward performance-related cues, external contingencies, and situationally appropriate choices in service of valued athletic goals.

The overarching purpose is to align everyday behaviors with personal values—focusing on the type of athlete and person the individual desires to be throughout their career.

Athletes are introduced to cognitive defusion, the process of unhooking actions and behavioral choices from automatic internal rules, negative thoughts, and emotional impulses:
Breaking Rule-Governed Behavior: Disconnecting behavioral choices from internal states (e.g., "I feel anxious, so I shouldn't take the shot").
Committing to Action: Actively committing to goal-directed actions governed by personal values rather than emotional discomfort.

Decentering from Automatic Connections
Athletes build upon early cue detection to deepen their awareness of how thoughts, feelings, and actions interact, developing the ability to decenter—stepping back to view internal states objectively rather than reacting automatically:
