REBT view of human nature
potential for both rational & irrational thinking, self-talk keeps us disturbed, capacity to change, dysfunctional negative thoughts are negative, except for in hypomania/mania, narcissistic PD, substance abuse
disputing irrational beliefs (3 components)
discriminate - between irrational (self-defeating) versus rational (adaptive) beliefs
detect irrational beliefs - (e.g., “shoulds”, “musts”, “awfulizing)
debate dysfunctional beliefs - by logically, empirically (what’s the evidence?), and pragmatically questioning them - “I want it, therefore I must have it.”
