evidence
Information used to support or prove a claim about the past.
history
The study of the past using evidence, not just a list of names and dates.
narrative
A story that connects events together in a particular order and from a particular point of view.
perspective
The particular point of view a person has, shaped by their experiences and position.
claim
A statement someone argues is true about the past.
claim testing
A four-part method (intuition, logic, authority, evidence) for evaluating whether a claim is well-supported.
scale
The “zoom level” — how wide or narrow a lens — a historian uses to look at the past.
scale switching
Moving between big-picture and close-up views of history to see how the picture changes.
community
A group of people who share a place, identity, or set of relationships.
network
A system of connections through which people exchange ideas, goods, or beliefs.
production
The way people make the goods and resources they need.
distribution
The way goods and resources are shared or moved among people.
frame
A lens historians use to focus attention on one part of the bigger historical picture.
memory
A personal recollection of past events, shaped by individual experience rather than evidence alone.
graphic biography
A one-page comic-style story about a historical figure that offers a fresh perspective on history.
collective learning
The process by which humans share and build on knowledge across generations, often through symbolic language.
symbolic language
Language made of shared symbols (like words or writing) that lets people store and pass on complex ideas.
