Lipids
Large and varied group of non-polar molecules that are insoluble in water but dissolve easily in organic solvents.
Triglycerides
Made of 3 fatty acids combined with 1 molecule of glycerol.
Saturated Fatty Acids
Fatty acids with no double bonds between carbon atoms.
Mono-unsaturated Fatty Acids
Fatty acids with one double bond between certain carbon atoms.
Poly-unsaturated Fatty Acids
Fatty acids with more than one double bond between certain carbon atoms.
Plasma Membrane
A membrane that surrounds the cell, selectively permeable to control substance transport.
Nucleus
Contains genetic material (DNA) and is responsible for controlling cell activities.
Mitochondrion
An organelle responsible for producing ATP through aerobic respiration.
Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum
A series of membranes studded with ribosomes for protein synthesis and transport.
Golgi Apparatus
Modifies, sorts, and packages proteins for secretion or delivery to other organelles.
Compartmentalization
The process of separating different reactions and concentrations within the cell.
