OSI Model (Developer & Purpose)
Developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to promote understanding by separating network functions into seven discrete layers.
The 7 Layers of the OSI Model (Bottom to Top)
1. Physical, 2. Data Link, 3. Network, 4. Transport, 5. Session, 6. Presentation, and 7. Application.
Purpose of the OSI Model
A functional guideline for designing network protocols, software, and appliances, and for troubleshooting networks.
Is the OSI model a standard/specification?
No. It is a reference model that serves as a functional guideline, not a strict implementation specification.
How do real-world systems use the OSI model?
Although not all systems implement this precise structure, they all implement each task (function) in some way.
