Force
A push or a pull that can change the speed, direction, or shape of an object.
Newton meter
An instrument used to measure the size of a force.
Newton (N)
The standard scientific unit used to measure force.
Friction (kahakaha)
The force generated when two materials rub together.
Tension
The force produced when a material is being stretched.
Magnetism
The force that enables compasses to work or holds things to fridge doors.
Air Resistance
The force that occurs when an object moves through the air.
Electrostatic
The force that occurs between two charged objects.
Weight (tetaimaha)
The force due to gravity acting on an object, measured in newtons (N).
Upthrust
The upward force a liquid or a gas exerts on a body floating in it.
Contact Force
A type of force that requires two objects or materials to be touching for it to have an effect, such as friction or air resistance.
Non-Contact Force
A force that can act from a distance without physical contact, such as gravity, magnetism, or electrostatics.
Mass (papatipu)
A measure of the amount of matter or "stuff" that makes up an object, measured in grams
