How many Quantum Number do we assign to an electron
4
What are the four Quantum Number that we assign to an electron?
Principal Quantum Number (n), Angular Momentum Number (𝓁), Magnetic Quantum Number (m𝓁), Spin Quantum number (ms)
Principal Quantum Number (n)
Written with an integer 1, 2, 3 … shows size and energy by telling what shell it is in.
Angular Momentum Number (𝓁)
Written as integer from 0 to (n-1) defines shapes through sub levels.
What sub levels are shown in Angular Momentum Number (𝓁)?
s p d f
s
0
p
1
d
2
f

What 𝓁 values are possible is n=2
1 0
What 𝓁 values are possible is n=3
2 1 0
Magnetic Quantum Number (m𝓁)
Written as an integer ranging from -𝓁 to positive 𝓁. Shows orientation of the orbital in space around the nucleus. (x plane, y pane, z plane)
What are possible m𝓁 values with a p orbital
1 0 -1
How many electrons can a orbital have?
2
Spin Quantum number (ms)
Either +1/2 or -1/2 showing wither a spin up or down.
Electron configuration
A way to write out the arrangement of electrons
How many orbitals does s have?
