What is infared radiation?

Energy transfer by electromagnetic waves

2
New cards

What part of the spectrum is infared radiation?

Just beyond the visible red light

3
New cards

All objects continually emit and absorb infrared radiation from their surface whatever their temp. True or false?

True

4
New cards

How does the temperature of an object affect the rate at which it emits infrared radiation?

The hotter an object is the more infrared radiation it emits in a given time. The higher the temperature of the material the more intense the infrared radiation.

5
New cards

Does the transfer of infrared radiation Involve particles?

No!

6
New cards

What is a vacuum?

A region that doesn't contain any matter - wen gas particles

7
New cards

How do we get energy from the sun?

The sun emits all types of electromagnetic radiation but the earth atmosphere blocks most of the radiation that would harm us. It doesn't block infrared radiation. The infrared radiation can travel through a vacuum such as space and this is how we get energy from the sun.

8
New cards

What are electromagnetic waves?

Electric and magnetic waves that travel through space.

9
New cards

Name the parts of the electromagnetic spectrum?

Radio waves
Micro waves
Infrared radiation
Visible light
Ultra - violet
X- Rays
Gamma rays

10
New cards

What heart of the spectrum is used in special cameras to " see" animals and people in the dark?

Infrared radiation

11
New cards

How do we experience infrared radiation on a daily basis ?

Warmth on our skin eg. From the sun or a fire

Explain the greenhouse effect on terms of radiation?

Gases in the earths atmosphere act like a green house trapping infrared radiation that is emitted from objects 0n the earth, stopping it from leaving the atmosphere. This makes the earth warmer than it would have been if it had no atmosphere.
