The unintended and less obvious functions of a social institution that are often unrecognized and not planned.

Differences between Latent and Manifest Function

Manifest functions are intended and obvious, while latent functions are unintended and less obvious. Manifest functions are usually positive, while latent functions can be positive or negative.

Examples of Latent and Manifest Function

Manifest function of a hospital is to provide medical care to patients, while the latent function is to provide employment opportunities to healthcare professionals. Manifest function of a church is to provide a place of worship, while the latent function is to provide a sense of community and belonging to its members.
