what is a stable electron configuration?
the valence electron shell is completely filled
What is ionic bonding?
to gain a stable configuration, they gain or lose their valence electrons to create a full outer shell
the ionic bond is due to the electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
What is electronegativity?
a measure of the ability of an atom to attract a pair of electrons
What is covalent bonding?
gain a full outer shell by sharing the outer electrons
the strongest type of primary bonds
What is metallic bonding?
outer electrons delocalised to create a sea of electrons
high electrical and thermal conductivities
What are intermediate bonds?
mixture of 2 different bonding methods
silicon - covalently bonded but some electrons can leave localisation showing metallic bonding
basis for semi coductors
What are van der waals bonds?
weak, low melting points and low modulus
caused by dipoles where there is seperation between negative and positive regions of an atom. causing a coulobmbic attraction
What are hydrogen bonds?
strongest secondary boding type caused by permanent dipoles.
large difference in electronegativity between h and o,f,n
