materials
Filter paper or chromatography paper
A solvent (like water or alcohol)
A mixture to separate (like ink or food coloring)
A container (like a beaker or glass)
process
Draw a line near the bottom of the filter paper using a pencil (not pen, as ink can interfere).
Place a small dot of the mixture (e.g., black ink) on the line.
Put the paper into the solvent so that the bottom touches the solvent, but the ink spot is above it.
Watch as the solvent travels up the paper, carrying different components of the mixture with it.
Different substances move at different speeds, causing them to separate into colored bands.
