AOM

Astigmatism
defective curvature of the cornea or lens of the eyes, which causes uneven or distorted images
hyperopia/hypermetropia (farsightendness)
unable to see things clearly, especially if they are close up
myopia (nearsightedness)
unable to see things clearly when they are far away
presbyopia
impairment of vision as a result of old age
cataract
clouding of the lens, or opaque glass like over the lens which blurs the vision and doesnt let light pass through- can be born with it or due to another illnesses occur- surgery or medication can help with this.
chalazion
small hard cystic mass/ granuloma on the eyelid due to chronic inflammation of the sebaceous gland
hordeolum/stye or sty
localized, purulent (consistent discharge of pus) due to an inflamed staph infection of a sebaceous oil producing gland in the eyelid- treatment: hot packs or surgery
diabetic retinopathy
retinal effects of diabetic mellitus are microaneurysms, hemorrhage of blood vessels, dilation of the retinal vein and neovascularization which cause vision loss in central vision of the eye
macular degeneration
progressive damage to the macular of the retina/ severe loss of central vision- treatment: increase in vitamins, eye drops to slow the process, or laser photocoagulation
nystagmus
repetative movements of one or both eyes
retinal detachment
2 layers of the retina separate from each other- usually due to trauma (head injuries, eye injuries, shrinkage of the vitreous humorous (causes holes or tears)
s/s: photopsia, floaters
treatment: photo coagulation (makes scar tissue over the tear), cryotherapy (freezer burn), or scleral buckle (silicone sutures)
photopsia
bright flashes of light
floaters
black spots or the object has a filmy shape
scleral buckle
silicone suture to bring the two tears together
strabismus/ abnormal deviation of the eye
failure of the eyes to look in the same direction because of weakness of the muscle controlling the position of one eye
esotropia
one eye turns inward or cross eyed
exotropia
one eye turns outwards: “wall eyed”
hypertropia
upward deviation of one eye
amblyopia
partial loss of vision from a “lazy eye”
diplopia
double vision
fluorescein angiography
intravenous injection of fluorescein (dye) followed by a series of photograph of the retina through dilated eyes
ophthalmoscopy
visual exam of the inter eye
