Cell
The basic structural and functional unit of life.
Tissue
A group of similar cells performing a common function.
Organ
A structure containing two or more tissue types working together.
Organ System
A group of organs working together to perform complex functions.
Organism
A complete living thing.
Integumentary System
Composed of skin, hair, and nails; functions in protection.
Skeletal System
Composed of bones; provides support and protection.
Muscular System
Functions in movement and heat production.
Nervous System
Functions in rapid communication and control.
Endocrine System
Functions in producing hormones and long-term regulation.
Cardiovascular System
Composed of the heart and blood vessels; functions in transportation.
Lymphatic/Immune System
Functions in fluid return and defense against disease.
Respiratory System
Functions in gas exchange.
Digestive System
Breaks down food and absorbs nutrients.
Urinary System
Removes wastes and regulates fluid and electrolyte balance.
Reproductive System
Produces gametes and supports reproduction.
Ocular Lens
Also known as the eyepiece; commonly provides 10× magnification.
Objective Lenses
Lenses providing different magnifications: scanning (4×), low power (10×), and high power (40×).
Condenser
Microscope component that concentrates light onto the specimen.
Iris Diaphragm
Microscope component that regulates the amount of light reaching the specimen.
Coarse Adjustment Knob
Microscope control that produces large focusing movements; used primarily under low power.
Fine Adjustment Knob
Microscope control that produces precise focusing movements to sharpen the image.
Total Magnification Formula
Calculated as Ocular magnification×Objective magnification.
Field of View
The area visible through the microscope; as magnification increases, field of view decreases, detail increases, and the specimen may appear dimmer.
Epithelial Tissue
Primary tissue type that covers surfaces and lines cavities; functions in protection, absorption, secretion, and filtration.

Types of Epithelial Tissues
Classifications of epithelial tissue by cell shape and layer structure, accompanied by specific anatomical examples.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
A single layer of flattened cells; found in the lungs.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
A single layer of cube-shaped cells; found in the kidneys.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
A single layer of tall column-like cells; found in the stomach.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
A single layer of cells appearing layered due to differing cell heights; found in the trachea.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Multiple layers of flattened cells; found in the esophagus.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Multiple layers of cube-shaped cells; found in sweat glands.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Multiple layers of tall column-like cells; found in salivary ducts.
Transitional Epithelium
Epithelial tissue adapted to stretch and change shape; found in the bladder.
Connective Tissue
Primary tissue type that supports, binds, protects, and stores; examples include bone, cartilage, blood, and adipose.
Muscle Tissue
Primary tissue type that contracts to produce movement.
Skeletal Muscle
Striated, voluntary muscle tissue usually attached to bones.
Cardiac Muscle
Striated, involuntary muscle tissue found in the heart.
Smooth Muscle
Nonstriated, involuntary muscle tissue found in the walls of hollow organs and blood vessels.
Nervous Tissue
Primary tissue type that conducts electrical signals for communication.
Transverse Plane
Also known as horizontal plane; divides the body into superior (top) and inferior (bottom) portions.
Sagittal Plane
Divides the body into left and right portions.
Frontal Plane
Also known as coronal plane; divides the body into front (anterior) and back (posterior) portions.
Oblique Plane
Cuts the body at an angle.
Dorsal Body Cavity
Posterior body cavity that contains the cranial cavity (brain) and vertebral/spinal cavity (spinal cord).
Thoracic Cavity
Ventral cavity situated above the diaphragm containing the lungs, heart, trachea, esophagus, pleural cavities, pericardial cavity, and mediastinum.
Mediastinum
Central region of the thoracic cavity located between the lungs containing the heart and other structures.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
Ventral cavity located below the diaphragm, divided into the abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity.
Abdominal Cavity
Superior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity containing the stomach, liver, gallbladder, spleen, and most intestines.
Pelvic Cavity
Inferior portion of the abdominopelvic cavity containing the urinary bladder, internal reproductive organs, and rectum.

Abdomen Divisions
Anatomical division of the abdominal area into 4 quadrants (using RLFR) and 9 regions (using SRHLS) for diagnostic and descriptive clarity.
Right Upper Quadrant (RUQ)
Abdominal quadrant containing the liver, gallbladder, small intestine, right kidney, and hepatic flexure.
Left Upper Quadrant (LUQ)
Abdominal quadrant containing the stomach, spleen, pancreas, left kidney, and splenic flexure.
Right Lower Quadrant (RLQ)
Abdominal quadrant containing the appendix, small intestine, and right ovary/fallopian tube.
Left Lower Quadrant (LLQ)
Abdominal quadrant containing the descending colon, small intestine, and left ovary/fallopian tube.
Epigastric Region
Superior middle abdominal region containing the stomach, pancreas, and duodenum.
Umbilical Region
Center abdominal region containing the small intestine and transverse colon.
Hypogastric Region
Inferior middle abdominal region containing the bladder, uterus, and rectum.
Right Hypochondriac Region
Superior right abdominal region containing the liver, gallbladder, and right kidney.
Left Hypochondriac Region
Superior left abdominal region containing the spleen and left kidney.
Right Iliac Region
Inferior right abdominal region containing the appendix and cecum.
Left Iliac Region
Inferior left abdominal region containing the sigmoid colon and left ovary.
