Drive Reduction Theory
A theory suggesting that events are reinforcing because they serve to reduce some physiological drive.
Physiological Drive
An internal state of deprivation that motivates behavior to restore homeostasis.
Incentive Motivation
The idea that the value of reinforcement can come from the stimulus itself, rather than just the reduction of a drive.
Premik Principle
The concept that high probability behaviors can be used to reinforce low probability behaviors.
Reinforcer
A stimulus or behavior that increases the likelihood of a behavior occurring again.
Behaviorism
A theory of learning based on the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning.
Operant Conditioning
A method of learning that occurs through rewards and punishments for behavior.
Clark Hull
A neo-behaviorist who proposed the Drive Reduction Theory.
Satiation
A state in which an individual has had enough of a reinforcer, reducing the likelihood of behavior associated with it.
High Probability Behavior
A behavior that an individual is very likely to engage in.
Low Probability Behavior
A behavior that an individual is unlikely to engage in without reinforcement.
