the 5 principles of wound healing?
remove cause
tissue temp
moisture balance/keep wound bed moist
control bacteria
adequate nutrition
principle 1: remove the cause
pressure
repetitive trauma
Wbing
edema
arterial compromise
avoid changes in wound bed temp!! How? how often change dressings?*
dec number of dressing changes
every 3-7 days**
reapply loose or removed dressing immediately
dry cells BLANK
die
how to manage tissue temp (principle 2) wet and dry..
keep wound covered
add moisture to wound bed
too wet??
manage drainage with absorptive dressings
increase dressing change frequency
Principle 3: Moisture Balance. Bacteria?
bacteria moves in with a break in the skin
bacteria competes with nutrients and O2 in wound bed
How to control bacteria in a wound?
- cleanse wound properly at each dressing change
- debridement of necrotic tissue (necrotic tissue harbors bacteria)
- high bacteria levels should always be addressed first (antimicrobials)
- pack dead space
(leads to infection if not)
