What is an auxiliary verb?
A helping verb used to build a compound tense. Here: AVOIR or ÊTRE.
Passé composé formula
Subject + AVOIR/ÊTRE in present + past participle.
Plus-que-parfait formula
Subject + AVOIR/ÊTRE in imparfait + past participle.
AVOIR present — je / tu / il

j'ai eu = I had / I have had. Past participle = eu.

Regular -ER past participle
-er → -é. parler → parlé; manger → mangé.
Regular -IR past participle
usually -ir → -i. finir → fini; choisir → choisi.
Many -RE past participles
often -re → -u. vendre → vendu; attendre → attendu.

When do most verbs use AVOIR in passé composé?
Most verbs use AVOIR unless they are common ÊTRE movement/change verbs or reflexive verbs.
Name common ÊTRE verbs
aller, venir, arriver, partir, entrer, sortir, monter, descendre, naître, mourir, rester, tomber, retourner, rentrer.
Agreement with ÊTRE — feminine singular
Add -e: elle est allée.
Agreement with ÊTRE — plural
Add -s for masculine/mixed plural, -es for feminine plural: ils sont allés, elles sont allées.
Passé composé: main use
A finished event, a sequence of events, a change, or an event that moves the story forward.
Imparfait: main use
Background: description, habit, ongoing past action, age/weather/feelings/context.
Imparfait endings
-ais, -ais, -ait, -ions, -iez, -aient.
How do you find an imparfait stem?
Take the present NOUS form, remove -ons, then add imperfect endings.
Big exception for imparfait formation
ÊTRE uses ét-: j'étais, tu étais, il était, nous étions, vous étiez, ils étaient.

"I was doing X when Y happened" — which tenses?
Ongoing background X = imparfait; interrupting event Y = passé composé.
Example: "I was reading when my friends arrived."
Je lisais quand mes amis sont arrivés.
Habit in the past — which tense?
Imparfait. Example: Quand j'étais petite, je jouais dehors.
One completed event yesterday — which tense?
Passé composé. Example: Hier, j'ai appelé ma mère.
Plus-que-parfait: main use
An action completed BEFORE another past action/moment — "the past before the past."
Example of plus-que-parfait
Quand je suis arrivé, il avait déjà mangé. = When I arrived, he had already eaten.
Plus-que-parfait with an ÊTRE verb
Use ÊTRE in imparfait + participle + agreement: elle était partie.
Negative passé composé pattern
ne/n' + auxiliary + pas + past participle: je n'ai pas mangé.
Negative plus-que-parfait pattern
ne/n' + imperfect auxiliary + pas + past participle: je n'avais pas fini.
il y a + duration
AGO: il y a deux ans = two years ago.
dans + duration
IN (future): dans deux jours = in two days.
pendant + duration
FOR a limited/finished duration: pendant trois heures.
depuis + duration / point
SINCE/FOR and still continuing now: depuis deux ans; depuis 2024.
pour + duration
FOR a planned/expected duration: Je pars pour trois semaines.
en + duration
IN the amount of time needed to complete something: J'ai fini en deux heures.
ça fait + duration + que...
Another way to say an action started in the past and continues: Ça fait deux ans que j'habite ici.
Finished "for two years" vs still continuing "for two years"
Finished = pendant deux ans. Still continuing now = depuis deux ans.
Quick tense test: "What was it like / what used to happen?"
Usually imparfait.
Quick tense test: "What happened next?"
Usually passé composé.
Quick tense test: "What had already happened before that?"
Usually plus-que-parfait.
