Biochemistry
The chemical reactions that occur in a cell.
Exoenzymes
Enzymes secreted outside of the cell to hydrolyze macromolecules into smaller monomers.
Substrate
The substance on which an enzyme acts; for DNase, it's DNA.
Nuclease
An enzyme that hydrolyzes nucleic acids, like DNase for DNA.
Protease
An enzyme that breaks down proteins into smaller peptides or amino acids.
Lipase
An enzyme that hydrolyzes lipids into fatty acids and glycerol.
Amylase
An enzyme that breaks down starch into glucose and maltose.
Differential Media
Media that allows for the differentiation of microorganisms based on specific biochemical reactions.
Hemolysins
Exotoxins produced by some bacteria that can destroy red blood cells.
Starch Agar Plate
A media used to test the ability of microorganisms to hydrolyze starch.
DNase Test
A test to determine if a microorganism can hydrolyze DNA.
Caseinase
An exoenzyme produced by some bacteria that hydrolyzes casein in milk.
Tributyrin
A type of triglyceride, a lipid substrate hydrolyzed by tributyrinase.
Gelatinase
An enzyme that hydrolyzes gelatin into amino acids.
