what are the four chambers in the heart?
left atrium, right atrium, left ventral and right ventricle
what are the four main blood vessels and there function
vena cava - brings in deoxygenated blood from the body
pulmonary artery - the blood passes from the heart to the lungs in the pulmonary artery
pulmonary vein - oxygenated blood passes from the lungs to the heart in the pulmonary vein
aorta - oxygenated blood is pumped from the heart to the body in the aorta
what is the pattern of the blood flow in the heart
first blood enters the left atrium and the right atrium
the atria now contracts and the blood is forced into the ventricles
the ventricles now contract and force blood out the heart
valves stop the blood from flowing backwards into the atria when the ventricles contract
what are the blood vessels and there functions
arteries - carry blood away from the heart
capillaries - exchange nutrients + oxygen wish tissues
veins - carry blood back to the heart
what are the blood vessels characteristics
arteries - blood will be at high pressures
capillaries - really small, exchange substances with cells, take away waste products and they are a single cell thick
veins - they are large but have small layers of elastic fibres + smooth muscle, they have valves to prevent blood from flowing backwards
