Matter
Anything that has mass and takes up space

Mass
The amount of stuff (or atoms) in an object or material, measured in grams

Atoms
The basic building block of matter

Solid
Tightly packed atoms, definite shape and volume

Liquid
Loosely packed atoms, definite volume, but no definite shape

Gas
Very loosely packed atoms, not definite shape nor volume

State of Matter
Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma

Physical Properties
Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing what the material is made of

Chemical Properties
Characteristics that describe how a substance will change when exposed to other materials. To observe these, you will change what the substance is.

Qualitative Properties
Characteristics described using your senses

Color
How an object reflects light

Odor
Smell of an object

Taste
Flavor of a substance

Hardness
How difficult to scratch the object

Texture
Describes the surface of an object, rough, smooth, slippery)

Quantitative Properties
Characteristics of matter that are measurable

Density
Amount of mass per unit of volume (space)

Conductivity
How well an object transfers heat or electricity

Magnetism
An invisible force exerted by some types of matter

Solubility
How well a substance dissolves into another substance (usually water) to produce a solution

Viscosity
A measure of resistance of a fluid to flow

Boiling Point
The temperature at which liquid turns into a gas

Melting point
The temperature at which solid turns into a liquid

Reactivity
How easily and fast a substance undergoes a chemical reaction

Inert
A substance that does not react with other substances

Corrosion
Gradual destruction of an object by chemical reactions with factors in the environment

Oxidation
Destruction of matter due to chemical reactions with oxygen

Tarnish
A thin layer of corrosion that forms on the outside of some metals such a brass, copper, silver, and aluminum

Toxicity
The degree to which a substance can harm living things

Flammability
How easily a substance will ignite or catch fire

Combustibility
How easily a substance burns (not just catching on fire)

Radioactivity
Particles released by unstable (radioactive) atoms

pH
A measure of how acidic or basic a solution is

Malleable
Can be hammered into thin sheets

Ductility
Can be stretched longways

Luster
Shiny and reflects light
