Digestive tract
Essentially a hollow tube that extends from the mouth to the anus.
Digestion
The breakdown process of food.
Absorption
The process of crossing intestinal epithelium and entering blood.
Prehension
The seizing and conveying of food into the mouth.
Mastication
The mechanical reduction of the size of ingested food particles by grinding.
Tongue
A muscular organ that moves food mass around the mouth and into the esophagus.
Salivary glands
Three pairs of well-defined glands that produce saliva.
Pharynx
The common passageway for food and air, opens into oral and nasal cavities.
Deglutition
The act of swallowing food.
Esophagus
Muscular tube connecting the mouth to the stomach.
Muscular sac-like organ
Stomach, where food is mixed with gastric juices.
Cardiac sphincter
Prevents reflux into the esophagus.
Fundus
Dome-shaped portion of the stomach where gastric glands are located.
Antrum
Constricted part of the stomach that joins with the small intestine.
Rugae
Ridges inside of the stomach that increase surface area for enzyme action.
Chyme
Partially digested liquified food that leaves the stomach.
Pancreas
An organ that has both endocrine and exocrine functions.
Insulin
Hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels.
Bile
A greenish-yellow solution produced by the liver that aids in fat digestion.
Cecum
Blind-ended pouch at the junction of the small intestine and large intestine.
Haustra
Sacculations in the colon that promote microbial digestion.
Rectum
The portion of the digestive tract that stores feces before elimination.
Anus
The terminal opening of the digestive tract.
Lymph nodes
Structures associated with immunity found along the gastrointestinal tract.
Gallbladder
An organ that stores bile produced by the liver.
Spleen
A lymphatic organ involved in immune function.
Mesentery
A fold of membrane holding the intestines in place.
Serosa
Outer layer of the intestine, continuous with the mesentery.
