What is the purpose of the male reproductive system?

Generate male gametes (sperm) & deliver to female reproductive system

What is the Penis?

Organ for elimination of urine/sperm

What is the Urethra?

Duct that delivers urine from bladder to outside body

What are Testis (testes)?

Primary reproductive organ, many seminiferous tubules which sperm is produced

What is the scrotum?

Pouch of skin containing testicles, houses testes away from body to lower temp during sperm production

What is the prostate gland?

Produces fluids necessary for lubricating & nourishing sperm.

What does the prostate gland control?

Release of urine & secretes protion of semen enhancing motility & fertility of sperm

What is the vas deferens?

Duct which sperm moves from testicle to urethra

What is a sperm cell?

Smallest of human cell w/ 3 distinct sections

What are the 3 parts of a sperm cell?

Head, midpiece & tail

What is the Acrosome?

Golgi- derived structure packed w. enzymes that assists w/ penetration for fertilization

What is the Head?

Contains centrioles thats compacted nucleus w/ tightly coiled DNA

What is the mid-piece?

Only part containing mitochondria & where ATP is produced helping w/ moving tail (flagellum)

What is the Flagellum (tail)?

Moves in whip like motion that propels sperm & navigates female reproductive system & reach egg

What does each gamete contributes?

22 autosomes (non-sex chromosomes) & 1 sec chromosome to zygote

What does an egg contribute?

X chromosomes

What does a sperm cell contribute?

Either X or Y chromosome

What is the main site of fertilization?

Fallopian Tube

What happens when a sperm & egg cell come together?

Fertilization

What does the acrosome do during fertilization?

Releases enzymes allowing sperm to pass to oocyte
