What is an organelle?
A small part of a cell with a particular job to do, e.g., nucleus.
What is a cell?
The smallest part of a living organism.
What is a tissue?
A group of specialized cells that carry out a particular job.
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues that work together to carry out a job in a system.
What is an organ system?
A group of different organs which work together to carry out a specific life process in an organism.
What is the function of the circulatory system?
Responsible for the flow of blood, nutrients, oxygen and other gases, as well as hormones to and from cells.
Name the major organs of the circulatory system.
Heart, lungs, arteries, and veins.
What is the function of the respiratory system?
Allows us to breathe and exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.
Name the major organs of the respiratory system.
Nose and nasal cavity, sinuses, mouth, throat (pharynx), windpipe (trachea), diaphragm, lungs.
What is the function of the immune system?
To protect the host from environmental agents such as microbes or chemicals.
Name the major organs of the immune system.
Bone marrow, lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, skin.
What is the function of the digestive system?
Digestion and absorption; the breakdown of food into small molecules, which are then absorbed into the body.
Name the major organs of the digestive system.
Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, and anus.
What is the function of the nervous system?
Allows electrical impulses to be sent from around the body to the brain and back again to stimulate a response.
Name the major organs of the nervous system.
Brain, spinal cord, sensory organs.
What is the function of the reproductive system?
To produce egg and sperm cells; to transport and sustain these cells & to nurture the developing offspring.
Name the major organs of the female reproductive system.
Ovaries, uterus, vagina, fallopian tubes
Name the major organs of the male reproductive system.
Penis, scrotum, testes
What is the function of the muscular system?
Allow movement and also maintain posture and body position.
Name the major types of muscles.
Skeletal, cardiac, smooth
What is the function of the skeletal system?
Body support, facilitation of movement, protection of internal organs.
Name the major organs of the skeletal system.
Skull, spine, rib cage, bones.
