General: Independent Variable
The variable that is being manipulated/systematically changed by the scientist.
(For example, if you are changing fertilizer brands to see which causes the most plant growth, the independent variable is the fertilizer brand.)

General: Dependent Variable
The variable that is changing in response to the independent variable. This is the "output" or "result" of a study - this is what is being measured by the experimenters.
(For example, if you are changing fertilizer brands to see which causes the most plant growth, the dependent variable is the plant growth)

General: Control Group
The group that does not receive the independent variable.
(For example, if you are changing fertilizer brands to see which causes the most plant growth, the control group is the one that gets regular dirt instead of a fertilizer)
General: Constant Variable
A factor that stays the same across all test subjects and throughout the duration of the experiment/study.
(For example, if you are changing fertilizer brands to see which causes the most plant growth, examples of constant variables could be: how much water each plant receives or how many hours of sunlight the plants get)
General: Directly related or directly proportional
When two variables increase together or decrease together.
If Y is directly proportional to X then:
Y = k * X
Where "k" is the constant of proportionality (a number that changes based on the experiment)

General: Inversely related or inversely proportional
When two variables change in opposite directions (one increases, the other decreases)
If Y is inversely proportional to X then:
Y = k / X
Where "k" is the constant of proportionality (a number that changes based on the experiment)

Chemistry: pH range of acids
0-7 (7 is neutral)

Chemistry: pH range of bases (also called alkaline solutions)
7-14 (7 is neutral)

The energy an object has due to its motion
(KE is based on two things: mass and speed/velocity, the more mass or speed an object has, the more Kinetic Energy it has)

The energy an object has due to its "potential" for stored energy.
(PE is usually based on an object's height off of the ground, the higher it is, the more PE it has)

A substance that speeds up the rate of a chemical reaction
Physics: What is a Proton?
A positively charged particle in the nucleus of an atom

Physics: What is a Neutron?
A small particle in the nucleus of the atom, with no electrical charge

A negatively charged particle; located outside the atomic nucleus
Chemistry: In a chemical reaction, what are the "Products"?
The elements or compounds produced by a chemical reaction.
These are located on the RIGHT side of a balanced chemical equation.
Chemistry: In a chemical reaction, what are the "Reactants"?
A starting material in a chemical reaction.
These are located on the LEFT side of a balanced chemical equation.

The reproductive cells (sperms and eggs)
Astronomy: What is the order of the planets (starting at the Sun and going outward)?
Sun, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune

Chemistry: In a chemical reaction, what is a "limiting reactant (reagent)"
Any reactant that is used up first in a chemical reaction; it determines the amount of product that can be formed in the reaction.
(Ex. A reaction uses oxygen and iron to produce a new compound, but the reaction runs out of oxygen before it runs out of iron - therefore the oxygen is the limiting reactant)
Chemistry: What is "a solution"?
A solution is made when a "solute" (oftentimes a solid or a powder) is dissolved into a "solvent" (oftentimes a liquid like water).
Genetics: What does the term "Genus" refer to?
This is the first part of the scientific name in binomial nomenclature.
(Ex. Humans are known as "Homo Sapiens", our genus is "homo" and our species is "sapiens")

Genetics: What does the term "Species" refer to?
A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring; the second part of the scientific name in binomial nomenclature.
(Ex. Humans are known as "Homo Sapiens", our genus is "homo" and our species is "sapiens")

Biology: What is Cellular Respiration (CR)?
CR is the process that releases energy by breaking down glucose and other food molecules in the presence of oxygen.
This is most often associated with animal cells on the ACT.
Geology: What is erosion and weathering?
The processes by which rock, sand, and soil are broken down and carried away.
This is usually caused by: wind, flowing water, moving ice (glaciers), or plant roots breaking up the soil.
General How many milliliters are in a liter?
1000 mL = 1 L
General: What is the "percent error" formula?
|accepted value-measured value| / accepted value x100
Where the "accepted value" is usually determined by a model/equation and the "measured value" is from a real experiment/measurement.

Biology: Whats the difference(s) between predator and prey?
A predator is an organism that eats another organism. The prey is the organism that the predator eats.
General: What does a balance measure?
Mass (in some type of "gram")

Volume (in some type of "liter")

You can use it to count anything that is too small to see with the naked eye.

Density = Mass/Volume
This is generally used to describe how "heavy" an object is.
In a solution, more dense materials will "sink" and less dense materials will "rise/float".

What should you do if one of the answer choices is "Cannot be determined"?
Proceed with caution! Double check the units of measure in the answers and on the graph to make sure they correspond. "Cannot be determined" is sometimes the answer (about 70% of the time) but not always.

Haploid have 1 copy of each chromosome - gametes. Diploid have 2 copies of each chromosomes - somatic (body) cells.
General: Significant Digit Rules
1. Non zero numbers are always significant
2. Zeros between non zero numbers are always significant
3. All final zeros to the right of the decimal place are significant
4. Placeholder zeros are not significant
5. Counting numbers and defined constants have an infinite number of significant figures

General: What are the rules for Metric System Conversions
• To convert larger unit to smaller unit, move decimal point to right
• To convert smaller unit to larger unit, move decimal point to left
- 1 kilogram = 1,000 grams
- 1 gram = 1,000 milligrams
