Disproportionation Reaction
A reaction in which the same species is both oxidized and reduced.
Oxidation Number
A measure of the degree of oxidation of an atom in a compound.
NaClO
Sodium hypochlorite, often formed in the reaction of chlorine with alkali.
HClO
Chloric(I) acid, which can sterilize water by killing bacteria.
Ionic Equation
An equation that shows the ions that are involved in a chemical reaction.
Oxidation
A process where an atom or molecule loses electrons, leading to an increase in oxidation number.
Reduction
A process where an atom or molecule gains electrons, leading to a decrease in oxidation number.
Half-equation
A representation of either the oxidation or reduction process in a chemical reaction.
Sterilising Agent
A substance that kills bacteria or inactivates viruses, often used in water purification.
Chlorine in Water Purification
Chlorine is used in water treatment as a disinfectant to kill pathogens and improve safety.
