Epiphysis
Ends of the long bone, it's function is to allow the joints of bones to move together easier. Made up of both spongy bone, which contains blood marrow and red blood cells, and cartilage, which covers the surface of this part of the bone.
Diaphysis
Located in the middle of the long bone, and it's shape is long and tubular. Made up of hard and compact bone.
Blood vessels
Travels through the long bone delivering nutrients.
Compact bone
Solid and dense, found in the outer layer of most other types of bone.
Periosteum
Thin, shiny white membrane, important in bone growth, repair, nutrition and attachment of ligaments and tendons.
Yellow marrow
Used for stored energy and cell production.
Medullary cavity
Space within the diaphysis where yellow bone marrow is stored
Spongy bone
Red marrow is stored here, and blood cell production occurs here. Absorbs shock/strain that is put on the bones during movement.
Articular cartilage
Covers the ends of the bone where they come together to form joints, main function is to reduce friction between bones.
