Dental Sextants
The division of the upper and lower dental arches into six distinct segments: Sextants 1, 2, and 3 in the maxillary arch, and Sextants 4, 5, and 6 in the mandibular arch.
Facial Outline of Canine
Pentagonal in shape.
Proximal Outline of Canine
Triangular in shape.
Cervical Cross-Section of Canine
Oval in shape.
Bifurcated Root in Anterior Teeth
A condition most likely found in mandibular canines (teeth 22 or 27).
Mesially Leaning Root Apex
A root feature characteristic most likely seen in the mandibular canine.
Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Central Incisors
Erupts at 7–8 years (teeth 8 and 9); root completion occurs at age 10.
Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Lateral Incisors
Erupts at 8–9 years (teeth 7 and 10); root completion occurs at age 11.
Eruption of Permanent Mandibular Central Incisors
Erupts at 6–7 years (teeth 24 and 25); root completion occurs at age 9.
Eruption of Permanent Mandibular Lateral Incisors
Erupts at 7–8 years (teeth 23 and 26); root completion occurs at age 10.
Eruption of Permanent Mandibular Canines
Erupts at 9–10 years (teeth 22 and 27); root completion occurs between 12–14 years.
Eruption of Permanent Maxillary Canines
Erupts at 11–12 years (teeth 6 and 11); root completion occurs between 13 and 15 years.
Root Completion Timeline
Roots generally finish developing about 2–3 years after tooth eruption.
Distally Offset Cingulum
Anatomical feature found on maxillary central incisors, mandibular lateral incisors, and mandibular canines.
Proximal
Toward the mesial or distal surfaces; surfaces that are adjacent to another tooth.
Mesial
Toward the midline.
Distal
Away from the midline.
Primary Dentition Period
The period of dentition lasting from 6 months to 6 years of age.
Mixed Dentition Period
The period of dentition lasting from about 6 to 12 years of age.
Permanent Dentition Period
The period of dentition lasting from about 12 years of age through adulthood.
Incisal Angles
Morphological angles found on incisors; absent on canines, which have cusp slopes instead.
Facial View of Maxillary Canine
Features a wider, more prominent crown and a more prominent facial ridge compared to the mandibular canine.
Facial View of Mandibular Canine
Features a narrower and more symmetrical crown compared to the maxillary canine, more closely resembling an incisor.
Maxillary Lateral Incisor
The most variable tooth in permanent anterior dentition; commonly presents as peg-lateral, congenitally missing, or with a 'twisted' crown appearance, lingual pits, and lingual/gingival grooves.
Hutchinson’s Teeth
A dental abnormality caused by congenital syphilis (Treponema pallidum).
Single Antagonist Teeth
Teeth that contact only one other tooth on the opposing arch during occlusion; specifically the mandibular central incisor and maxillary 3rd molar.
Self-Cleansing Crown
A crown description specifically associated with the canine tooth.
Prominent Middle Facial Developmental Lobe
A developmental feature prominent in canine teeth.
