Biology
The scientific study of life.
Evolution
The process of change over time, which serves as a fundamental principle of biology.
Reductionism
An approach that breaks down complex biological systems into their simpler parts to study them better.
Emergent Properties
Properties that arise due to the specific arrangement and interactions of parts within a system as complexity increases.
Systems Biology
An approach to studying biology that analyzes the whole network of dynamic interactions among the parts of a biological system.
Cell
The basic unit of structure and function in living organisms, and the smallest unit capable of performing all activities required for life.
Prokaryotic Cell
A type of cell that lacks a nucleus or other membrane-bound organelles.
Eukaryotic Cell
A cell containing membrane-bound organelles, including a distinct membrane-enclosed nucleus.
Chromosomes
Structures within cells that contain genetic material in the form of DNA (deoxyribose-nucleic acid).
Genes
The fundamental units of inheritance passed from parent to offspring that direct the growth and development of cells.
Gene Expression
The process by which information encoded in a gene directs the synthesis of a cellular product such as a protein.
Genome
An organism's entire library of genetic instructions.
Energy Flow and Chemical Cycling
The ecosystem process where energy flows directionally (often entering as light and exiting as heat) while chemical nutrients cycle within the system.
Climate Change
A directional change to the global climate that lasts for three or more decades.
Three Domains of Life
The highest taxonomic ranks of organisms: Domain Bacteria (prokaryotes), Domain Archaea (prokaryotes), and Domain Eukarya (eukaryotes).
Descent with Modification
Charles Darwin's proposal that contemporary species arise from a succession of ancestors that accumulated adaptations over time.
Natural Selection
A mechanism of evolutionary change where environmental factors selectively favor individuals with advantageous heritable traits, leading to increased survival and reproductive success.
Adaptive Radiation
The process in which an ancestral species diverges into multiple distinct species due to adaptations to differing environmental niches.
Science
An approach to understanding the living world.
Inquiry
The search for information and explanation of natural phenomena through observation, hypothesis generation, and experimental testing.
Qualitative Data
Recorded observations in descriptive form, often sensory-based (e.g., descriptions of animal behavior).
Quantitative Data
Recorded observations expressed as numerical measurements and statistical values.
Inductive Reasoning
A type of logic in which general conclusions are derived from a large number of specific observations.
Deductive Reasoning
A form of logic in which specific results or predictions are extrapolated from general premises.
Hypothesis
An explanation based on observations and assumptions that leads to a testable prediction.
Experiment
A scientific test conducted under controlled conditions to evaluate one or more variables.
Scientific Theory
A broad, testable explanation for natural phenomena supported by a large body of evidence, which can be modified or rejected upon discovery of new research.
