Essential Nutrient

Deficiency Disease

Carbohydrates
Nutrients that serve as a source of energy.
Lipids
Nutrients that are sources of energy and play roles in cellular development and regulation of body processes.
Proteins
Nutrients that help produce structural and functional components in the body, including enzymes and cell membranes.
Vitamins
Nutrients that regulate body processes and maintain immune function.
Minerals

Dietary Supplement
A product containing a vitamin, mineral, herb, or other substance that increases total dietary intake.
Kilocalorie
A measure of food energy, equivalent to the heat needed to raise the temperature of 1 liter of water by 1 degree Celsius.
Macronutrients
Nutrients needed in large amounts that provide energy, including carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
Micronutrients
Nutrients needed in small amounts that do not supply energy, including vitamins and minerals.
Energy Density
The energy value of a food in relation to its weight.
Calories
Units of measure for energy provided by foods.
