Stoichiometry
The area of study that examines the quantities of substances consumed and produced in chemical reactions.
Reactants
The substances located on the left side of a chemical equation.
Products
The substances located on the right side of a chemical equation.
Combination Reaction
A reaction pattern where two or more substances react to form one product.
Decomposition Reaction
A reaction pattern where one substance breaks down into two or more substances.
Decomposition of Metal Carbonates
A reaction where metal carbonates decompose when heated to give off carbon dioxide (CO2) and a metal oxide.
Combustion Reaction
Rapid reactions that produce a flame, most often involving oxygen in the air as a reactant.
Formula Weight (FW)
The sum of the atomic weights (AWs) for the atoms in a chemical formula.
Molecular Weight (MW)
The sum of the atomic weights (AWs) of the atoms in a molecule.
Percent Composition
The percentage mass contribution of an element in a compound, calculated as FW of compound(# of atoms)(AW)×100.
Avogadro's Number
Equal to 6.02×1023, which equals one mole.
Molar Mass
The mass of 1mole of a substance, also referred to as atomic weight (AW).
