Class 1 lesions are...
pit and fissure restoration
Which locations are involved in class 1?
- the occlusal surfaces of molars and premolars
- the occlusal two thirds of the buccal and lingual surfaces of molars
- the lingual surfaces of anterior teeth
What are class 2 lesions?
Involve the proximal surfaces (mesial and distal) of posterior teeth
What are class 3 lesions?
Involve the proximal surfaces of the anterior teeth
What can class 3 lesions also involve?
may or may not involve the lingual extension but DO NOT involve the incisal line angle
What are class 4 lesions?
all proximal surfaces of anterior teeth which also INVOLVE the incisal line angle
What are class 5 lesions?
CERVICAL THIRD of all teeth, including the proximal surface of posterior teeth where the marginal ridge is not included in the cavity preparation (Do not involve pit & fissure areas)
What are class 6 lesions?
incisal edges of all anterior teeth and the cusp tips of all posterior teeth
What is the Angle's classification based on?
relative position of maxillary first molar
(if missing, canine is used)
What is malocclusion?
misalignment or incorrect relation between the teeth of the two dental arches when they approach each other as the jaws close
What is the molar relationship of normal occlusion?
mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar aligns with the buccal groove of the mandibular first molar
What is the canine relationship of normal occlusion?
maxillary canine occludes with the distal half of the mandibular canine and the mesial half of the mandibular first premolar
What is the molar relationship of Class 1 malocclusion?
mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar occludes with the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first permanent molar
What is the canine relationship of Class 1 malocclusion?
mesial incline of the maxillary canine occludes with the distal incline of the mandibular canine. The distal incline of the maxillary canine occludes with the mesial incline of the mandibular first premolar
What are the aspects of Class 1 malocclusion?
- Individual tooth irregularities (crowding/spacing/other localized tooth problems)
- Inter-arch problems (open bite/deep bite/cross bite)
What is the molar relationship of Class 2 distooclusion?
mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar is DISTALLY (posteriorly) positioned when in occlusion with the mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first molar
What is the canine relationship Class 2 distoocclusion?
- mesial incline of the maxillary canine occludes ANTERIORLY with the distal incline of the mandibular canine
- distal surface of the mandibular canine is POSTERIOR to the mesial surface of the maxillary canine by at least the width of a premolar
What is Division 1 of Class 2 distoocclusion?
- molar relationships are like that of Class II and the maxillary anterior teeth are protruded
- Teeth are proclaimed and a large overjet is present
What is Division 2 of Class 2 distooclussion?
- molar relationships are Class II where the maxillary central incisors are retroclined
- maxillary lateral incisor teeth may be proclaimed or normally inclined. Retroclined and a deep overbite exists
What is the molar relationship of Class 3 mesioocclusion?
mesiobuccal cusp of the maxillary first permanent molar occludes DISTALLY (posteriorly) to the mesiobuccal groove of the mandibular first molar
What is the canine relationship of Class 3 mesioocclussion?
- Distal surface of the mandibular canines are mesial to the mesial surface of the maxillary canines by at least the width of a premolar
- Mandibular incisors are in complete crossbite.
What is the line of occlusion of Class 3 mesiooclussion?
not specified but irregular, depending on facial pattern, overcrowded teeth and space needs
What is the prognathic of Class 3 mesiooclussion?
concave face profile with prominent mandible
What is TRUE class III malocclusion (SKELETAL)?
genetic in origin due to excessively large mandible or smaller than normal maxilla
What is PSEUDO Class III malocclusion (FALSE or postural)?
- mandible shifts anteriorly during final stages of closure due to premature contact of incisors or the canines
- Forward movement of the mandible during jaw closure can also result from premature loss of deciduous posterior teeth
