a disorder with onset during the developmental period that includes both intellectual and adaptive functioning deficits in conceptual, social, and practical domains. Can be caused by genetics (DS) or environment (FAS/lead posioning)

How is language development in kids with ID?

happens in the same sequence as typical kids but just delayed

What is Echolalia?

repeating what others say. Usually in profoundly ID-ed kids

cognitive skills in ID kids

very concrete thinking, difficulty with abstract concepts, which affects mostly semantics

morpho skills in kids with ID

usually very poor bc of abstract nature of bound morphemes and often have telegraphic speech. Tend to omit bound morphemes and function words

syntax in kids with IDs

reduced both expressive and receptive language in this area. Develop these skills like normal kids, just at a delayed rate. Often use short sentences and struggle to understand complex ones.

Pragmatic skills in kids with ID

can be more passive or bc of weak communication skills can be more physically aggressive. Can communicate more physically over verbally.
