Requirements for production of concentrated urine:
High ADH levels (more aquaporins) and High osmolarity of renal medullary fluid.
“Single Effect”
Hypothetical starting condition with concentrations equal to that of plasma. Diffusion of water out of descending limb matches concentration to that of surrounding fluid.
Distal tube and collecting ducts
Formation of concentrated ADH.
Diuresis
production of very dilute urine
Antidiuresis
production of concentrated urine
Renal papilla
Deep portion of the medulla where extensive water reabsorption occurs.
