Nationalism
A doctrine that claims supreme loyalty from individuals to the nation and the state that represents it.
State
A tangible political entity including four elements: people, territory, government, and sovereignty.
Nation
A cultural term referring to a group of people bound together by history, culture, common ancestry, race, religion, or language.
Self-determination
The principle that allows nations to determine their own political status and form of governance.
Waves of Nationalism
Chronological phases marking the rise and influence of nationalist sentiments, including those following the French Revolution, WWI, WWII, and the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Hypernationalism
An extreme form of nationalism that goes beyond traditional nationalism, emphasizing national interests to an excessive degree.
Austro-Hungarian Empire
A former empire in Europe, its dismantling led to the emergence of new nation-states after WWI.
Colonialism
A historical period where powerful nations established control over foreign territories, often leading to nationalism among colonized peoples.
Ethnic Group
A community of people who share a common cultural background, often associated with a specific nation.
Multinational State
A state that contains multiple nations or ethnic groups, which may or may not coincide with its political boundaries.
