7 stages of play

1. Unoccupied Behaviour: occupies self by watching (infant or toddler)

2. Onlooker play: observing and imitate later(infant or toddler )

3. Solitary play: child plays alone (infant to preschool)

4. Parallel play: child Plays beside but not with others (toddler)

5. Associative play: similar material (Preschool)

6. Cooperative plays: 2 or more work together (preschool)

7. Competitive play: with rules (kindergarten) (school age)

4 types of play

1. Functional: explore, discover (ex: simple repetitive movement like shaking a rattle")

2. Constructive: goal/product oriented (ex: child sets out to complete specific tasks like building a three block high tower)

3. Symbolic: Fantasy (pretend, role play) (ex: child imitates story character)
