Ultimate shell
The outermost shell, designated as the nth shell.
Pen-ultimate shell
The shell designated as (n−1)th.
Ante-penultimate shell
The shell designated as (n−2)th.
Aufbau Principle
A principle stating that electrons first fill subshells of the lowest available energy, then fill subshells of higher energy.
Subshell Orbitals
The number of orbitals per subshell: s (1), p (3), d (5), f (7), and g (9).
1st Transition series
The 3d Series.
Lanthanoids
The 4f Series.
Actinoids
The 5f Series.
Group III
The group in which both Lanthanoids and Actinoids are present.
Period 1 Element Count
Contains 2 elements (1s).
Period 2 and 3 Element Count
Contains 8 elements (2+6).
Period 4 and 5 Element Count
Contains 18 elements (2+10+6).
Period 6 and 7 Element Count
Contains 32 elements (2+14+10+6).
Period 9 (Assumed) Element Count
Contains 50 elements (2+18+14+10+6).
