Basileus
A local chief or king who presided over the assembly of the region's people and was advised by a council of elders and community elites.
Demos
The general population or people of a specific region.
Apsidal Structure
A type of early Greek building with a rounded end, dating to c. 1000 BC, associated with chieftain residences or burials.
Pithekoussai
An 8th-century BC trade settlement linked to expanded trade routes, land acquisition, and resource management.
Polis
An independent, self-governing political unit or city-state that developed around c. 750 BC, consisting of an urban center and its surrounding territory.
Attica
The region surrounding the capital city of Athens, whose residents were all considered Athenian citizens.
Athens
The central capital city of the broader region of Attica.
Athenians
Citizens originating from any part of the entire region of Attica, rather than exclusively from the urban center of Athens.
Autarky
The condition of self-sufficiency and independent governance aimed for by sovereign poleis.
Dreros Law Code
The earliest surviving written law code, originating from Dreros on Crete and dating to c. 650 BC.
Hoplite Warfare
A style of citizen-based infantry warfare that reinforced a strong sense of civic identity, shared ethics, and common bond within the polis.
Magistrates
Governing officials organized into boards who increasingly assumed executive and political powers formerly held by the basileus.
Rule of Law
A political governance system founded on formal written laws, citizen rights, and agreed-upon councils and assemblies.
