Describe someone who is “poor in spirit”

**Those who are poor because they are opposed by the wicked and those who realize that only God's generous riches can pay their debts**

Describe someone who is meek.

**Humble and considerate when others do us wrong; meek people recognize that their strength comes from God**

Why should we show mercy to others?

**Because God has shown mercy to us.** 

What is mercy?

**Not giving judgment to those who deserve it- forgiveness, compassion showing love to the weak.**

What is a pure heart

**A heart that is free of dirt and contamination and wants to please and serve god**

What is God most concerned with?

**Our hearts**

How do we become peacemakers?

**We work as God intended us to work- bringing glory to Him in Everything we do to spreading the gospels**

1. How is peace made?

**Peace is made between God and man when people come to salvation one person at a time**

What is persecution?

**When someone suffers for the sake of Christ, when people are hated because they are followers of Jesus - not when they make trouble for themselves with arrogance.**

What did Jesus mean when He said we are to be the “salt of the earth”

**We are supposed to be different from the rest of the world and add flavor. We are to be an example to the world of God's design for how we should live.**

What did Jesus mean when He said we are to be the “light of the world”?

**When we do good works, we are to give HIM the  Glory. People should notice that we are different, then when they do, point them to jesus.**

What is Matthew 5-7 called?

**He did not come to abolish the Law, but to fulfill it.**

What does it mean that Jesus came to fulfill the Law?

**Fulfilling the law is more than just obeying the commandments - its living a life of righteous- Jesus wants us to be good people from the inside out.**

What did Jesus say about our righteousness?

**It should exceed that of the scribes and pharisees**

**Internal- He wants our hearts to be good because our actions will reflects our hearts**

Why is it wrong to insult a brother?

**Implies that they are worthless even through we know all human are made in God's image**

Why is calling someone a “fool” wrong?

**It's a term of condemnation- calling someone a fool makes you sound as if you have the authority to condemn someone to hell- putting yourself in the place of God**

Is it a sin to be angry?

**No - just any sinful actions you do when your angry** 

Unresolved anger can lead to...

1. What are the benefits of reconciliation in relationships?

1. **YOur own good- feel better and receive less of a penalty** 
2. **The good of others- they won't be tempted to sin in greater ways** 
3. **God's glory - both of you can worship God freely**

**You shall not commit adultery and you shall not covet**

What causes us to sin?

**Our thoughts in our heads/hearts - not our hands or eyes** 

What had the Jews grown up believing about divorce?

**They must take care of legal stuff- give them a certificate.**

What was God’s original intention for marriage?

**To be together and to not separate** 

WHy did God give them the ability to divorce?

**He didn’t**

What is the one exception Jesus gives for divorce?

**Sexual immorality**

 If we sin in any area of life, what happens? Are we destined for hell because of our sin?

 When is the only time in history that things have been God’s best and perfect?

What is an oath?

**A promise** 

Why does Jesus tell believers they shouldn’t take oaths?

**Because Christains should always keep their word. They shouldn’t have to swear/promise anything** 

Why is swearing anything wrong?

**Because it’s all God’s -he is over everything so swearing to anything is taking his name in vain** 

What was the original intention of “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”?

**It was meant to keep crimes and punishments equal in court** 

 What had the Jews turned it into?

**An excuse to take revenge on those who had wronged them**

What does Jesus tell them to do instead of seeking revenge?

**Turn the other cheek. Give to those who ask you more than what they asked for. Go the extra mile. Be generous with what God has given you.**

 What is the key to deciding what we should do when we are confronted with evil?

**Godly wisdom from the Holy Spirit**

What had the Jews grown up believing about how they should treat their enemies?

**“You Shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.”**

Is “hate your enemy” found anywhere in the Bible?

How did the Jews begin believing this?

**The Law got twisted among the Jews because of theirs nature**

**“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,”**

How does God treat his enemies?

**He is kind to even those who hate him. He gives them their food, their health , and other enjoyments of life.**

Why should we love our enemies?

**Because God loves us and all humans are created in his image**

What does Jesus tell us we strive for in Matt. 5:48?

**Perfect/holiness** 

Can we achieve this on our own?

**No - we need the holy spirit to make us perfect/holy**

What does Jesus mean by “perfect” in v.48?

**Complete and wholehearted in followed God’s words**
