What is sound?
Vibrations: complete back-and-forth motion of an object
What are sound waves?
Sound Wave: longitudinal wave that is caused by vibrations and travels through a medium
How do sound waves travel?
all directions away from its sorce
Though A Medium- solid (fastest, closest together particles, liquid, gas (slowest, farthest apart particles)
disturbs particles in a medium, causing them to vibrate
What is pitch?
How high or low, you think a sound is depending on frequency and wavelength of a sound wave
What determines pitch?
frequency and wavelength
The higher, the frequency, the shorter the wavelength -v.v-
Loudness
Measure of how well a sound can be heard
What makes a sound loud?
Amplitude: Measure of how much energy a wave carries. Max distance that the particles vibrate from rest.
Greater amp. = louder sound
How is loudness measured?
intensity of wavelength
Decibel: unit used for loudness
Doppler Effect
change in the observed frequency of a wave when the sound source, the observer, or both are moving
how do sound waves interact with each other?
matter can reflect sound waves
Sound interactions:
Reflection For sound = Echo
Diffraction: bending of waves around a barrier
What is a resonance?
happens when a sound matches the natural frequency of an object and causes it to vibrate
