Proximal process
A reciprocal interaction between an active developing person and the immediate environment; changes in the child can change the environment, which then further influences the child.
Microsystem
The person’s immediate environment where proximal processes occur, such as family, school, peers, neighborhood, or a local playground.
Mesosystem
The network of relationships and interactions among a person’s microsystems, such as communication between a parent and a teacher.
Exosystem
A setting the child may not directly participate in but that indirectly affects the child, such as a parent’s workplace or socioeconomic circumstances.
Macrosystem
The larger culture’s customs, values, laws, and social institutions that shape the other environmental systems.
Bronfenbrenner's environmental systems
Described as nested structures, like Russian dolls, with each level embedded within larger levels.
Bioecological model
