buccal morph

lingual morph

promixal morph

mesial

distal

occlusal

M/D is in it: bc ManDibular

2
New cards

buccal + root

  • for both band molars, crowns are wider mesiodistally than cervicoocclusally - but the diff is higher for 1st mand molar

  • from buccal view, ML cusp is visible bc its the longest cusp

  • MAND 1ST MOLAR = 3 buccal cusps, 2 buccal grooves = mesiobuccal btwn MB and DB and SHORTER DISTOBUCCAL btwn DB and Distal

  • MAND 2nd molar = 2 buccal, 2 lingual

  • both mesial and distal contact is same

  • both molars have 2 roots = mesial is slightly longer and nearly twice as long as the crown in 1st mand molar

  • 2nd mand molar = roots are often fused, but mesial is still longer

  • short root trunks of BOTH have a depression between cervical line and bifurcation

  • all molars = convec buccal height of contour is in the cervical third

3
New cards

lingual

  • both crowns taper from buccal to lingual and therefore are narrower on lingual side. NARROWER

  • Mesial cervical lines on both first and second molars slope occlusally from buccal to

lingual and curve very slightly toward the occlusal surface. (Visualize it like a slightly arched line on the mesial side, going up a bit as it moves from buccal to lingual.)

  • distal cervical lines (CEJ junction) = almost straight

4
New cards

proximal morphology

  • as with all posterior teeth EXCEPT FROM MANDIBULAR FIRST PREMOLARS) mesial marginal ridge is located more occlusally

5
New cards

mesial

  • two cusps: mesiobuccal/distouccal and MESIAL ROOT are visible from this aspect

  • mesial aspect is broader, mesial cusps are higher

  • contacts are normal

  • mesial marginal ridge and mesial ridges of the mesial cusps are confluent

6
New cards

distal

  • gross outline = like mesial aspect

  • more of the tooth is seen from this end bc distal side is smaller and the buccal/lingual surfaces converge distally

  • cervical line is straight

7
New cards

occlusal morphology

  • roughly hexagon shape (on bottom - most sturdy: needs to be on bottom)

  • mand 2nd molar has 4 cusps so it has + shape

  • crown is wider mesiodistally than buccolingually

  • bucolingual measurement is bigger on mesial than distal portion

  • MB groove btwn MB and DB
DB groove btwn DB and D

  • L btwn ML and DL
