Skin Cancer
One common disease of the integumentary system, can cause sufficient DNA damage to result in skin cancer.
Basal cell carcinoma
arises within the stratum basale; most common type of skin cancer, but is the least dangerous form.
Squamous cell carcinoma
a cancer that affects the keratinocytes of the stratum spinosum; commonly found on scalp, ears, and hands; can spread if left untreated.
Malignant melanoma
uncontrolled growth of melanocytes; highly metastatic; most deadly of all skin cancers.
Albinism
a genetic disorder that affects (completely or partially) the coloring of skin, hair, and eyes. This is primarily due to the inability of melanocytes to produce melanin.
vitiligo
the melanocytes in certain areas lose their ability to produce melanin, possibly due to an autoimmune reaction. This leads to a loss of color in patches.
Eczema
chronic, inflammatory reaction often associated with allergies causing dry, itchy patches of skin resembling rashes
Acne
inflammatory disease of the sebaceous glands in the skin ; common at onset of puberty and hormonal changes; overproduction of sebum can block hair follicles
Abcess
localized collection of pus at the site of an infection
Cellulitis
widespread infection of the skin accompanied by inflammation and pain
Tinea
general term for a skin infection caused by fungi
Ringworm
a type of fungal infection of the skin; presents as a circular, itchy and red rash
Tinea pedis
athlete’s foot; causes itching, redness & peeling
Tinea capitis
fungal infection found on scalp
Tinea unguium
fungal infection of toenails and fingernails; also called onychomycosis
Scabies
contagious skin disease transmitted by mites
Psoriasis
chronic autoimmune disorder that results in patches of thick red skin with the appearance of silvery scales on elbows, knees, scalp, low back, face, feet, fingernails, toenails, and mouth
