Information Technology (IT)
The use of computers, software, and telecommunications to store, process, and transmit information.
Information Age
The current era characterized by the rapid, widespread transformation and transmission of information through digital technology.
Electromechanical Age
The era (1840−1940) in which electrical and mechanical technologies combined to enable early information-processing devices like the telegraph and telephone.
Generation of Computers
A period in computing history characterized by a major shift in the underlying technology used to build computers, such as vacuum tubes or transistors.
Premechanical Age
The period (c.3000BCE−1450CE) where people relied on manual tools like the abacus and early writing systems on papyrus and paper.
Mechanical Age
The period (1450−1840) featuring inventions like the printing press and mechanical calculators such as Pascal’s Pascaline and Leibniz’s Stepped Reckoner.
Electronic Age
The period from 1940 to the present where components like vacuum tubes, transistors, and microprocessors transformed computing.
First Generation Computers
Computers produced between 1940−1956 that used vacuum tubes and machine language; they were large, expensive, and generated excessive heat.
Second Generation Computers
Computers produced between 1956−1963 that introduced transistors and high-level programming languages such as COBOL and FORTRAN.
Third Generation Computers
Computers produced between 1964−1971 that utilized integrated circuits (ICs) to increase processing speed and reliability.
Fourth Generation Computers
The era from 1971 to the present marked by the invention of the microprocessor and the rise of personal computers and the internet.
Fifth Generation Computers
The current and future era focusing on Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, and natural language processing.
Computer
An electronic machine derived from the Latin "computus" and "computare" that can accept, manipulate, produce, and store data.
Input
Data that is entered into or received by a computer.
Process
The manipulation, calculation, or transformation of input data according to a set of instructions or a program.
Output
The result or outcome that comes from the transformation process of a computer.
Hardware
The collective term for the physical and tangible components of an analog or digital computer.
CPU
Central Processing Unit; the brain of the computer that processes and executes digital instructions.
RAM
Random Access Memory; a volatile and temporary memory storage that makes information immediately accessible to programs.
SSD
Solid-state drive; a non-volatile storage device based on NAND flash memory technology.
GPU
Graphics processing unit; a chip-based device that processes graphical data as an extension to the main CPU.
NIC
Network interface card; a circuit board or chip that enables a computer to connect to a network.
System Software
The set of programs that make a computer work, including memory management and input/output control, such as Operating Systems.
Utility Software
Programs designed to help manage and tune system or application software, such as Antivirus or Disk management tools.
Application Software
Software that performs specific tasks for the user, such as word processors, spreadsheets, or database management.
Liveware
The people interacting with the computer system, including System Analysts, System Programmers, and System Operators.
Procedures
A set of instructions written in code to instruct a computer on how to perform tasks or run software.
Data
Raw, unprocessed facts, numbers, text, or multimedia information that serves as input or output.
Connectivity
The element of a computer system where computers are linked to a network to facilitate sharing of information.
Internet
A specific interconnected network that connects computers worldwide using common standards like TCP/IP.
TCP/IP
A set of rules for computer communication; TCP breaks data into packets, while IP handles the communication between computers.
LAN
Local Area Network; a group of computers connected in a small area like a building or office.
PAN
Personal Area Network; a network interconnecting devices within an individual's immediate workspace, typically within a range of 10meters.
MAN
Metropolitan Area Network; a network that covers a larger geographic area by interconnecting different LANs.
WAN
Wide Area Network; a network extending over large geographical areas like states or countries, such as the internet.
World Wide Web
Invented by Tim Berners Lee in 1991, it refers to the interlinked HTML pages accessed over the internet.
URL
Uniform Resource Locator; a unique website address that users type into a browser to access a specific site.
Portal Website
A website that aggregates many functions such as email, news, and research data.
Ethics
A set of beliefs about right and wrong behavior in society.
Netiquette
The rules of conduct for respectful and appropriate communication on the internet.
Computer Ethics
A set of moral principles that regulate the use of computers.
