Point
A primary generator of form indicating a position in space, which can be stable (centered) or aggressive (off-center) to create visual tension.
Line
A primary element with length, direction, and position, described by two connected points that can describe movement, growth, or suggest an axis.
Plane
An element formed by extending a line in a direction other than its intrinsic direction, possessing length, width, shape, surface, orientation, and position.
Volume
A three-dimensional element generated by extending a plane, consisting of vertices, edges, and surfaces, with form as its primary identifying characteristic.
Axis
An ordering device used in architectural design to organize building forms and spaces.
Form
The formal structure of a work in art and design that arranges and coordinates elements to produce a coherent image, referencing both internal structure and external outline.
Shape
The characteristic outline or surface configuration of a form, serving as the principal aspect used to identify and categorize forms.
Visual Inertia
The degree of concentration and stability of a form, which depends primarily on its geometry and orientation.
Cylindrical surfaces
Surfaces generated by sliding a straight line along a plane curve or vice versa, also classified as translational or ruled surfaces.
Translational surfaces
Surfaces generated by sliding a plane curve along a straight line or over another plane curve.
Ruled surfaces
Surfaces generated by the continuous motion of a straight line.
Rotational surfaces
Surfaces generated by rotating a plane curve about an axis, such as a sphere.
Parabolas
Plane curves generated by a moving point that remains equidistant from a fixed line and a fixed point not on that line.
Hyperbolas
Plane curves formed by the intersection of a right circular cone with a plane cutting both halves of the cone.
Hyperbolic paraboloid surfaces
Surfaces generated by sliding a parabola with downward curvature along a parabola with upward curvature, or by sliding a straight line segment with its ends on two skew lines.
Saddle surfaces
Double curved surfaces featuring upward curvature in one direction and downward curvature in a perpendicular direction.
Shell structure
A structural system using double curved surfaces typically made of thin plates of reinforced concrete that transmits forces via compressive, tensile, and shear stresses.
Gridshell structure
A structural system pioneered by Russian engineer Vladimir Shukhov relying on double curved geometry constructed from a grid or lattice network.
Primary solids
Volumetric forms such as spheres, cylinders, cones, pyramids, and cubes generated by extending or rotating primary shapes.
Regular Forms
Forms whose parts are related in a consistent and orderly manner, generally stable and symmetrical about one or more axes.
Irregular Forms
Forms whose parts are dissimilar and related in an inconsistent manner, generally asymmetrical and dynamic.
Subtractive Transformation
The process of altering a form by subtracting a portion of its volume, creating mutilated forms that may or may not retain their initial identity.
Additive Transformation
The transformation of a form achieved by adding secondary elements to its volume.
Centralized Form
An additive architectural composition where secondary forms cluster around a dominant, geometrically regular central parent-form.
Linear Form
An additive form consisting of a series of forms arranged in a row or produced by a proportional change in a form's dimensions.
Radial Form
A combination of centrality and linearity consisting of linear forms extending outward from a central parent-form.
Clustered Form
A collection of architectural forms grouped together by proximity or by sharing a common visual trait or function, lacking overall geometric regularity.
Grid form
A composition of modular forms regulated by a three-dimensional system of intersecting grid lines.
Articulation of Form
The deliberate treatment of surfaces and joints where planes meet, establishing clear visual clarity and relationships between individual parts and the whole.
Base Plane
A horizontal spatial element that establishes a simple figure contrasted against a background, allowing continuous flow around it.
Circle

Base Plane
A horizontal spatial boundary that establishes a simple figure contrasted against a background, allowing continuous space flow around it.
Elevated Base Plane
A horizontal spatial boundary raised above ground level to create a distinct domain and break spatial continuity.
Depressed Base Plane
