How many states of consciousness are there?
Consciousness is not an on and off switch it is more like a river, a continuum of consciousness.
What is consciousness?
Different levels of consciousness; ones thoughts, feelings, memories and the external world.
What is controlled processes?
Something that requires your full consciousness/alertness/awareness.
What is automatic processes
Something that acquires only a little bit of your awareness and attention and it doesn’t interfere w/ other tasks.
Is multitasking effective?
Yes. depending if you have a balance between controlled and automatic processing it is effective.
Does music improve focus?
No
When can music work when trying to focus?
-If the task you are doing is automatic (leaving the music part as controlled)
-The music is calm and familiar
-If the listener is not doing anything that involves controlled processing.

What is the cycle of meditation?
-Anchor

What is the circadian rhythm?
Biological clock that regulates your body within a 24hr sleep/wake cycle
How does your circadian rhythm begin?
Light comes to your eyes and sends signals to your hypothalamus then your pineal gland decreases the producted melatonin.
What are factors that distrup your bodily rhythm?
- Sleep deprivation
- Jet lag
- Excessive stress
-Light dark exposure therapy
- removal or excessive light and dark cues
- Night shifts
How many hours of sleep do we need to get (at different stages)
-Infants: 12-16 hrs
-Teens: 8-10 hrs
-Adults: 7-9 hrs
-Senior: 7-9 hrs
Why do seniors find it hard to fall asleep?
Seniors often have trouble sleeping due to medical conditions
Does sleep mean unconsciousness?
No, our sleep goes through various levels of awareness/brain activity
How many cyles of dreams do we go through?
We go through 5-6 cycles of dreams

What are Psychoactive drugs?
Drugs that are chemicals that change brain functions and alter perceptions, mood, consciousness and/or behavior.
What is physical dependence?
When your body is physically reliant on drugs.
What is tolerance?
Diminishing the effect of the drug by using it regularly.
What is withdrawal?
It is unpleasant physical symptoms after not using drugs.
What is Psychological Dependence?
Emotional discomfort when not using the drug (used to relieve negative emotions)
What is a stimulant?
Drugs that increases the body (“uppers”) .
What are depressants?
Drugs that decreases arousal and stimulation of the body (“downers”) slowing brain - body connection
What are hallucinogens?
Drugs that cause hallucinations and or/ distorted perceptions.
