How does a recent extraction site appear on a radiograph?
A radiolucent extraction socket with a clearly defined radiopaque bundle-bone outline.
What is a bundle bone?
The radiopaque bone lining the tooth socket where the periodontal ligament fibers were attached.
What happens to the extraction socket during healing?
*New bone is deposited into the socket
*The radiolucent socket gradually fills in
*The bundle bone slowly fades
*After about 18 months, the socket can no longer be distinguished from surrounding bone
How can you distinguish a recent extraction site from pathology?
A recent extraction site has a well-defined socket outline (bundle bone) and a history of extraction. It is a normal healing finding, not a disease.
