Uses RNA; holds up to 8,000 BP; targets dividing cells; inserts randomly into genome; may cause immune response

Adenovirus

Holds up to 7,500 BP; targets many cell types; strong immune response; very efficient at first but results are temporary

Adeno-associated virus (AAV)

Holds up to 5,000 BP; targets many cell types; no immune response; inserts into chromosome without disrupting genome; long-lasting results

Herpes simplex virus

Holds up to 20,000 BP; gene does NOT insert into genome; only infects nervous system; may cause immune response

Naked DNA / Liposome

Any size DNA; no immune response; not cell-specific; low efficiency; temporary results

Lentivirus

Uses RNA; holds up to 8,500 BP; targets many cell types; no immune response; integrates into host genome; may disrupt existing genes
